From Music to Cinema: A Journey of Reinvention

In the world of independent cinema, few artists embody persistence and reinvention quite like Asheboro, North Carolina native Ty Brueilly. Known to many in the music industry as Ty Bru, Brueilly spent more than two decades shaping the international independent hip hop scene before diving headfirst into photography and film in 2015. What began as an exploration quickly became a defining new chapter in his artistic journey. Today, with eleven titles forming the foundation of his “Shucks Cinematic World,” Brueilly has established himself as one of the most compelling experimental voices working in contemporary cinema.

His breakout into Hollywood came with A Night In Charlotte With Sweeney Ty in 2022, a hybrid hip hop film that premiered at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre and earned him Best Experimental honors at the Golden State Film Festival. That moment marked a shift in Brueilly’s creative path, propelling him toward film with the same passion and determination that had already brought him international recognition in music

The Evolution of the Shucks Cinematic World

The heart of Brueilly’s filmmaking lies in his ever-expanding “Shucks Cinematic World.” It began with his unconventional debut Shucks in 2017, a black-and-white silent yet musically scored film that explored themes of addiction, alienation, and human fragility. The work garnered multiple awards, including Best Experimental Short, Best Cinematography, and Best Editing at the ISA in Los Angeles, as well as international recognition from film festivals in India and Italy.

The success of Shucks established Brueilly’s voice as one that blends raw visual storytelling with symbolic, emotionally resonant music. The film was not only a creative experiment but also an attempt to bridge cultural gaps and communicate universal struggles without reliance on language. This ambition to create meaningful dialogue through art has remained central to all of Brueilly’s projects.

Following Shucks, films such as Meng Hua Lu expanded his reputation, with wins at the Oaxaca Film Festival and official selections across the globe. Each new project added to the cinematic universe he was crafting, pulling viewers into a body of work that merges arthouse aesthetics with deeply personal explorations of human complexity.

Seven Years in the Making: 7eventh 7irkle

In September 2025, Brueilly unveiled his most ambitious project yet: 7eventh 7irkle. Seven years in the making, the film premiered at the TCL Chinese Theatre to strong critical praise, including Cinedump’s Jessie Hobson calling it “a triumph of experimental horror.”

Inspired by the seventh circle of Dante’s Inferno, the film confronts dark themes such as addiction, PTSD, depression, and grief with an unflinching lens. For Brueilly, the project was as much a personal odyssey as a cinematic one. “I wanted to bring to my audience the gritty and dark truths of human emotions,” he explained. “It’s raw, visceral, and unsettling, and I hope it sparks conversations that lead to growth.”

What distinguishes 7eventh 7irkle is not only its subject matter but the scale of its production. Nearly one hundred collaborators came together, marking Brueilly’s largest team to date. He also composed the score, carefully pairing music with performances to amplify emotional resonance. The result is a layered work that blurs the boundaries between film, sound, and lived experience.

Recognition and Roots

Despite his growing success on international stages, Brueilly remains deeply connected to his roots. The upcoming hometown premiere of 7eventh 7irkle at Asheboro’s historic Sunset Theatre on December 11, 2025, carries symbolic weight. The screening will serve as both a return to where it all began and the grand finale of the 20th anniversary of Mightier Than The Sword Records, the label Brueilly founded in 2005.

Through Mightier Than The Sword, he has supported more than fifty artists, produced over one hundred albums, and organized thousands of events worldwide. This dual legacy in music and film highlights not only his creative versatility but also his commitment to building communities of expression.

Artistic Philosophy and Influences

Brueilly’s influences are as diverse as his body of work. He draws from Dante’s Divine Comedy, the raw energy of Kanye West, the theatrical grit of Rob Zombie, and the precision of Stanley Kubrick. This eclectic mix reflects his dedication to merging bold concepts with deeply personal expression.

More importantly, Brueilly views cinema as a platform for dialogue. His films probe contemporary vices and stigmatized realities not to shock but to encourage empathy and awareness. By confronting discomfort, he seeks to open doors to understanding and growth.

Looking Ahead

With 7eventh 7irkle beginning its film festival run, Brueilly shows no sign of slowing down. His ability to compose, direct, film, and edit his own projects places him in a rare category of artists who carry complete creative control from conception to premiere. This holistic approach, combined with his proven track record in both music and film, suggests that the Shucks Cinematic World will continue to expand in innovative and unexpected ways.

For Ty Brueilly, every project is more than a film. It is an opportunity to reveal hidden truths, challenge perceptions, and connect audiences across borders. His journey from Asheboro to Hollywood—and back again—demonstrates that independent cinema thrives on authenticity, persistence, and the courage to create against all odds
