James Sugrue is a dedicated animator and storyteller with a passion for crafting strong, dynamic female characters. Inspired by the Golden Age of Animation, he sought to create a heroine who was not only powerful but also embodied the whimsical, rubber hose aesthetic of classic cartoons. This vision led to the birth of Bluehilda, his lovable yet looney leading lady—an enchanting witch made from a blueberry.

James first conceived Bluehilda after attending the Broadway production of Wicked in 2006, and her journey from idea to screen was a labor of love. In 2015, Chris Prynoski, founder of Titmouse, recognized James’ talent and provided him with the resources to create an 8-minute Bluehilda short film. This animated feature quickly garnered multiple awards, solidifying Bluehilda’s place as a standout character. The magical screwball even made a brief cameo in the popular horror film M3gan, further expanding her reach.
Beyond animation, James continues to develop Bluehilda’s adventures as an ongoing webcomic, allowing fans to engage with her mischief and charm in new ways. While pursuing his creative projects, he also works full-time at Titmouse Studio, contributing his expertise to the animation industry.

James’ personal life is deeply intertwined with his work. He is a devoted husband to Melissa and a loving father to their newborn son, Teddy. His late firstborn son, Felix, remains a profound source of inspiration, constantly reminding James to persevere and practice patience in both his personal and professional life.
With a deep appreciation for classic animation and a commitment to innovative storytelling, James strives to create heartfelt, entertaining narratives that resonate with audiences of all ages. His dedication to the craft ensures that Bluehilda’s adventures—and his own creative journey—will continue to captivate viewers for years to come.
