Samantha Casella’s filmmaking journey has taken her across continents and genres, establishing her as a visionary director. From her studies in screenwriting, directing, photography, and acting in cities like Turin, Florence, Rome, and Los Angeles, she has built a career defined by a fearless exploration of human emotion, surreal imagery, and profound storytelling. Her work has earned her a unique place in the world of cinema, celebrated globally for its depth and creativity.
Casella’s directorial debut, the short film Juliette, introduced her distinct voice to the filmmaking world. Winning 19 awards, including the prestigious Massimo Troisi European Award, Juliette marked the beginning of her exploration into surrealism and human psychology. This early success established her as a director unafraid to tackle the complexities of life, a theme that would define her future projects.
Following Juliette, Casella deepened her exploration of surrealism with short films like Interrupted Silence, Memory to the Island of Dead, and Agape. These works delved into abstract, dreamlike narratives that examined trauma, memory, and identity. Through them, Casella revealed her fascination with the human subconscious, presenting stories that resonated deeply with audiences by unfolding within the viewer’s own imagination.
Casella’s passion for cinema extended beyond surrealism into documentary filmmaking. One notable project was Via Crucis al Pantheon, a documentary that captured the creation and installation of the Via Crucis at the Pantheon in Rome. With this work, she showcased her ability to bring real-world events to life with the same emotional intensity present in her fictional films, highlighting the intersection of art and spirituality.
Her international recognition soared with the 2019 short film I Am Banksy, which premiered at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles during the Golden State Film Festival. The film won Best International Short and further solidified Casella’s reputation on a global scale. Like much of her work, I Am Banksy encouraged audiences to question identity, reality, and the very nature of art.
In 2020, Casella reached new heights with her short film To A God Unknown, divided into chapters inspired by Russian poet Esenin, American novelist Steinbeck, and French poet Rimbaud. The film, a tribute to her love for literature and poetry, earned an extraordinary 236 awards at festivals worldwide. Casella’s ability to merge literary influences with visual storytelling exemplified her mastery in crossing artistic mediums while maintaining a powerful narrative voice.
Her latest short film, The Antithesis of Love, pays homage to the biblical Song of Songs, one of history’s most profound poetic works. In this project, Casella not only directed but also starred as the lead actress, showcasing her versatility. The film has won 20 awards, further proving her skill in tackling timeless themes with fresh, artistic vision.
Building on the success of her short films, Casella made her feature filmmaking debut with Santa Guerra, a surreal exploration of a woman’s struggle to overcome the trauma of her daughter’s death. Premiering during a special event at the 79th Venice Film Festival, Santa Guerra has since won an astounding 647 awards across 53 countries. The film is a testament to Casella’s ability to handle emotionally charged material while maintaining her signature surrealist style, inviting viewers to journey into the depths of the human psyche.
Casella’s second feature film, Katabasis, delves deeper into the darker aspects of human nature. The story follows a woman, played by Casella herself, who was abused as a child and now seeks out dangerous, abusive situations as an adult. Premiering at the 81st Venice Film Festival, Katabasis earned Casella the Starlight Award for Best Emerging Director, along with the Cinema and Industry Award and the Veneto Region Award for Best Emerging Director. With this film, Casella continues her fearless exploration of uncomfortable truths and the complexities of human behavior.
